What do you see when you look in the mirror? This may sound like a strange question, but unfortunately, middle school aged girls often see themselves in a negative way. There are over 8,000 middle school aged girls in the Clackamas County community! That is an overwhelming potential for thousands to feel negative body image, low self-esteem, and rejection.
We think this is really sad! But we have an idea! Love My Reflection is a project based on the belief that beauty doesn’t come in a size or shape and that all girls have the right to feel beautiful, confident, strong, and amazing! Our mission is to help develop positive self-esteem and body images in middle school girls by engaging in peer to peer interaction and giving out mirrors with encouraging statements written on them. Our hope is that girls will be accepted for who they are and feel good about themselves from receiving uplifting words from other girls. Love My Reflection and our peer outreach project were created as part of the Destination Imagination, Inc.* challenge (see below for more info).
* Destination Imagination, Inc. is a non-profit organization that creates programs to teach the creative and problem solving processes. It is an educational program where student teams solve open-ended Challenges that incorporate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), the Arts, and Service Learning disciplines and can present their solutions at tournaments.
